ELA (English Language Arts) We use the Wonders program to guide our pre-readers toward becoming readers! This program covers the following topics: - Concepts of Print: Distinguishing between letters, words and sentences; recognizing upper and lower case letters; recognizing parts of a book; understanding directionality; matching print to speech; and understanding that written words are represented by specific sequences of letters. - Story Comprehension: Identifying literary elements of characters, setting and plot events; digging deeper into text to make inferences, conclusions and connections between texts; and predicting events, retelling and citing text evidence. - Phonemic Awareness: Rhyming, counting sounds in words, counting syllables, blending onset rimes, isolating beginning, middle, and final sounds, manipulating phonemes, segmenting words into sounds and distinguishing between long and short vowel sounds. - Word Recognition Skills: Study of letters, sounds, and blending of sounds. Recognizing sight words instantly. - Writing Skills: Progression of writing from writing random letters to writing multiple sentences using phonemic spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. What does this look like in our classrooms? •Wonders starts with a 3 week “Smart Start” unit that reviews/introduces letter recognition. One to two letter are introduced each day. They are introduced only for letter recognition. A deeper study of each letter occurs during the other units with a different letter being studied each week. •After Smart Start there are 10 units. Each is 3 weeks long. •Sight words will be introduced one or two a week and assessed at the end of each quarter. •There is a test at the end of each unit. It will assess comprehension skills, phonics, phonemic awareness and sight words. The tests are read to the children. •Wonders includes an online component where you can review the story and skills your child is learning each week. You can access the online component HERE. Math We use the Pearson Realize program for math to cover the following topics: •Counting and cardinality (recognizing, counting, comparing, ordering and making groups of numbers 0-100) •Operations and algebraic thinking (addition, subtraction) •Number and operations in base ten (composing and decomposing numbers to 20) •Measurement and data (measuring by attributes, classifying, counting and categorizing data) •Geometry (identify and describe shapes, position and location of shapes, analyze, compare and compose shapes) •Problem solving and listening (throughout the year) What does this look like in our classrooms? •We watch a 2-3 minute introductory video clip and complete a daily math mat, using hands-on manipulatives appropriate for each topic. •Assessments are given at the end of each topic. •Pearson also includes an online component that is very helpful for reviewing topics taught in the classroom, especially if your child is absent. You are able to access the same video clips from home! You can access the online component HERE. Click on the Helpful Links page if you need help with your login information. |
